Colorado's Battery Stewardship Act (SB 25-163) sets up a producer-funded statewide battery recycling program that starts collecting in 2028 — CDPHE says batteries should not be discarded in the trash or recycling, and points to existing drop-off locations until then. To prevent fires from lithium-ion batteries, tape battery terminals and/or place batteries in separate plastic bags and never put these batteries in household garbage or recycling bins (US EPA).

Batteries can cause fires if not handled properly, especially at recycling facilities and in garbage trucks — they should not be discarded in the trash or recycling (CDPHE).
