Minnesota prohibits rechargeable batteries, and products with non-removable rechargeable batteries, from being disposed of in mixed municipal waste — manufacturers must run collection programs, and most counties take batteries at household hazardous waste sites. To prevent fires from lithium-ion batteries, tape battery terminals and/or place batteries in separate plastic bags and never put these batteries in household garbage or recycling bins (US EPA).

Rechargeable batteries and products with non-removable rechargeable batteries may not be disposed of in mixed municipal waste (Minnesota Pollution Control Agency).
