Missouri DNR says most standard household batteries can be disposed with household trash — tape the ends first and throw them away in small numbers — but the department recommends taking them to a permanent household hazardous waste facility for recycling instead. To prevent fires from lithium-ion batteries, tape battery terminals and/or place batteries in separate plastic bags and never put these batteries in household garbage or recycling bins (US EPA).

Do not put electric vehicle or energy storage system lithium-ion batteries in the trash or municipal recycling bins (Missouri DNR).
