New York's rechargeable battery law makes it illegal to throw covered rechargeable batteries in the trash and requires retailers that sell them to take them back — common single-use alkaline batteries are not covered by the law. Read from New York State DEC · checked 2026-08-19

To prevent fires from lithium-ion batteries, tape battery terminals and/or place batteries in separate plastic bags and never put these batteries in household garbage or recycling bins (US EPA).

It is illegal for any person to throw covered rechargeable batteries in the trash (NYSDEC).
