California bans compressed gas cylinders — including propane tanks used for BBQ, camping, or plumbing — from the trash, recycling, and organics bins; take them to a household hazardous waste facility. Read from CalRecycle · checked 2026-08-19

Do not put propane tanks in the trash — solid waste equipment can rupture the cylinder and any spark can cause an explosion, and you should never attempt to de-valve your own propane tank (New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services).

It's illegal to dispose of hazardous waste in the garbage, down storm drains, or onto the ground because it can harm health and cause fires (CalRecycle).
