Do not put propane tanks in the trash — solid waste equipment can rupture the cylinder and any spark can cause an explosion, and you should never attempt to de-valve your own propane tank (New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services).

Never put a propane cylinder or canister in the trash, and avoid cutting the cylinder with a torch or cutting wheel — it may still contain propane and is a potential fire and explosion hazard (CDPHE).
