Propane tanks disposal in Connecticut

What Connecticut says to do with propane tanks, read off Connecticut DEEP's own page on 2026-08-19.

Connecticut DEEP says do not throw your propane tank in the trash and do not remove the valve — take empty tanks to your municipal transfer station, save them for an HHW collection that accepts them, or leave one beside a Blue Rhino exchange display at no cost. Do not put propane tanks in the trash — solid waste equipment can rupture the cylinder and any spark can cause an explosion, and you should never attempt to de-valve your own propane tank (New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services).

Do not put an obsolete tank into a dumpster or other disposal container — if the trash truck compacts its load it could crush and rupture the cylinder, releasing the rest of the propane (CT DEEP).
