Propane tanks disposal in Maryland

What Maryland says to do with propane tanks, read off Maryland Department of the Environment's own page on 2026-08-19.

Maryland's environment department says to exchange an old propane cylinder with a dealer or recycle it as scrap metal — some landfills take cylinders only with the valve removed, so call ahead, and no cylinder belongs in a dumpster. Do not put propane tanks in the trash — solid waste equipment can rupture the cylinder and any spark can cause an explosion, and you should never attempt to de-valve your own propane tank (New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services).

Do not dispose of your cylinder in a dumpster or other disposal container — this could create an explosion hazard; and avoid cutting the tank or wheel valve with a torch (Maryland Department of the Environment).
