Propane tanks disposal in Wisconsin

What Wisconsin says to do with propane tanks, read off Wisconsin DNR's own page on 2026-08-19.

Wisconsin DNR's household hazardous waste table tells you to refill a refillable propane tank at your supplier and to use up a small nonrefillable cylinder so a scrap metal operation can recycle it — cylinders should not go in your curbside recycling. Read from Wisconsin DNR · checked 2026-08-19

Do not put propane tanks in the trash — solid waste equipment can rupture the cylinder and any spark can cause an explosion, and you should never attempt to de-valve your own propane tank (New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services).

Single-use all-steel cylinders must first be completely empty, and cylinders should NOT be placed in your curbside recycling (Wisconsin DNR).
